Oh Bravest Bird

Oh bravest bird, you were the last

of your nervous congregation,

delicate and all aflutter,

to take wing away from that bread

as I walked passed.

Must you live your life in fearful

snatches? Torn in two directions?

Are you always last or sometimes

first? Sparrows in the snow, it is

hard in this world.

Oh bravest bird, you are to me

wisdom and courage in feather.

Carry your virtues so lightly

that you can flit and float and fight

death's every threat.
